Michael J. Brown

Michael J. Brown Social Security Disability Lawyer - Wolf and Brown

Michael J. Brown is a graduate of the Widener University School of Law. He did his undergraduate work at the Camden campus of Rutgers University. Like most of his classmates, he worked his way through college, in his case, as a hotel desk clerk and as a night auditor. This experience led to his first career managing, at various times, hotel rooms, beverage and banquet services. He has often stated his belief this is the best education an aspirating lawyer can have. There are few places where a young college graduate can learn negotiation skills, crisis management, and serving customers, with high expectations, while delivering on a deadline.

Upon graduation from law school, he worked in the Philadelphia law firm of Margolis, Edelstein, Scherlis, Sarowitz and Kraemer. Here he practiced in the area of personal injury and products liability. He later took a position with the New Jersey Division of Disability Determination Services (DDS). DDS is charged with the responsibility of deciding Social Security Disability claims. Michael was a claims adjudicator for DDS.

Part of the responsibility of a Claims Adjudicators is to work closely with the staff physicians, psychiatrists and psychologists to render a fair and accurate decision on each disability claim. Michael is fond of telling his clients that he “went to medical school” while working with DDS. A Claims Adjudicator is required to have a working knowledge of the medicine that involves a claimant’s disability application. Never satisfied with his current knowledge level, he would go into work an hour early each day, grab a file, and “find a physician’s brain to pick”. The knowledge he gained from this “medical school” gives him unique insight on, not only his clients’ diagnoses and complaints, but how these medical problems and limitations impact upon their daily lives. Sometimes folks have been in pain and have dealt with physical limitations for so long, and have made so many adjustments to their life styles; they forget how it is to live “normally”. His insight has been invaluable in his case presentations to Social Security.

Michael was born in Philadelphia and raised in Runnemede, New Jersey. His father Joe was a printer for Defense Support Personnel in South Philadelphia. His mother Esther worked as a sewing machine operator. While he did not share his father’s passion for deep sea fishing, he did inherit his interest in genealogy and family history research. His other interests are woodworking and photography. He is something of a film snob, refusing to own a digital camera. His most recent project is learning the German Language. So, after three years: ,,Er spricht sehr ein bisschen Deutsch”

Michael is a member of the Camden County Bar Associates, a sustaining member of the National Organization of Social Security Claimant Representatives (NOSSCR) and is a member of the National Organization of Veterans Advocates (NOVA).

Michael and his wife Alice are married 36 years this September and have two children and their Airedale Terrier, Smithers.
